First trip to Vegas - need advice

My husband and I are headed to LV in January - first trip for me, long time since his last visit. We are spending 3 nights and have booked a West Wing room at MGM Grand. Wonder if we should reconsider?? Also have tickets to LOVE at the Mirage for one night. We are midwest farmers who have money but don%26#39;t like to part with it needlessly. Don%26#39;t need lots of glitz and glamour but clean %26amp; comfortable rooms are important. Not big gamblers (farming is enough of a gamble) but will do some. Would like advice on another show and tips on good eating and fun places for late 40ish types (lounges with entertainment, etc.)

Thanks in advance for your advice!

NDT - my recommendation would be to reconsider your room. The grand tower rooms are very clean and comfortable. West Wing clean also, but smaller and a little cramped and dark, IMO. Check out Rita Rudner at Harrahs, it%26#39;s a fun and funny show! Have a great time!

Keep checking the prices on other hotels. Although the MGM is fine, you might want to consider the Treasure Island. I say this because:

1.The show at the Mirage is just a tram away.

2. I would also try to get in to see Spamalot at the Wynn. You can check for specials on Travelzoo.com.

3. The wynn buffet is one of the best in town and you can join the players club there and earn two ';free'; one pretty quickly.

4 and finally, the Carnaval Court is pretty popular on this forum and might be what you%26#39;re looking fun in terms of fun.

Given all the above, the TI would be closer to the action recommended and you would save on transportation.

You could think about staying at Bally%26#39;s if prices are any less there...the rooms are clean and comfortable, and the location is really nice in my opinion!!

LOVE is a great show...I know you%26#39;ll enjoy that!

In Bally%26#39;s there is a lounge called the ';Indigo Lounge'; just across from the Tequila Bar...at night they have some good Motown type music and singers there...you may enjoy it.

Have a great trip!!

West Wing rooms are clean, quiet and have very nice beds. They arent traditional rooms, and they dont really have a comfortable to sit down other than the bed. Its a modern style of decor, and the chair they give you isnt exactly something to lounge in. Ive heard the Grand Tower rooms at the MGM are very comfortable, and are more traditional.

I loved the WW room, but I can see why some people would choose the Grand Tower. Just be assured that if you end up staying with the WW, youll have a very nice room.

Here%26#39;s the truth - It%26#39;s your first trip to Vegas, you are going to have a great time! I would probably go with the Grand Tower room at MGM over the WW, especially since it%26#39;s a few bucks cheaper.

Thanks for the advice on Grand Tower vs WW rooms - who would think that the less expensive room would be larger???

ND, check out the floorplan on the website. I always like bigger, which is why I%26#39;d always opt for the Grand Tower of the West Wing.(100sf more)

But like another poster said, West Wing has been updated to the new look of the hotel. Grand Tower has been upgraded to the new beds and linens which are really comfortable.

Check the floor plans of the bathrooms. Grand Tower is a seperate room with bath/shower, while West Wing has shower only. (For many that%26#39;s no big deal)

If you haven%26#39;t stayed at MGM before, maybe learn the floor plan ahead to get your bearings. MGM is one of the largest hotels in the world, and some have trouble navigating. They do give you a floor plan when you check in, and the signage is very good.

Hallways can be long, so maybe ask for one close to the elevators if possible.

If you enjoy Abba, maybe take in MamaMia at Mandalay Bay

I also enjoyed Rita Rudner very much. She%26#39;s at Harrahs.

Spamalot at the Wynn was also fun!

When staying at the MGM, I love using the Monorail. Last I checked the website had a 24 hour pass for $9 per person. I paid $8 in June and used it 4 times...that makes the cost to travel down the strip $2 per trip.

Easy to get off at Harrahs station and walk across to Mirage for ';Love';

You will love LOVE. Spamalot is a great show, too.

Haven%26#39;t stayed at MGM, so can%26#39;t comment on the rooms.

My favorite shows LOVE, Spamalot, Mama Mia, KA - in that order.

Geeeze,...the mistakes I make...

Meant to say....

Grand Tower ';over'; the West Wing

and Grand Tower has a seperate room for the bathroom, while West Wing is just seperated by a wall. Sink open, Toilet and shower with doors.

Hotel room: Many frequent visiters develop an uncommon loyalty to a particular hotel and won%26#39;t stay anywhere else. It could be a matter of taste or familiarity with the hotel and staff. To tell you to pick one hotel over another may be sending you to some place that doesn%26#39;t agree with you. (Come back often and stay at different places each time till you find one you like more than the others.)

Shows: I have heard good things about Love. Bally%26#39;s and Tropicana still have the old style Vegas type shows. This is Vegas and any show will have to be good to keep playing (Celine had to close and redo her show shortly after it opened.)

Food: Across the street at Hooters you can get the $3 breakfast and the $6 prime rib. Every major hotel has at least on five star restaraunt. Is this a special event or do you want to make it special? When my sister visited I treated her and her friend to dinner at Andre%26#39;s in the Monte Carlo. Three people, food, drinks, wine, gratuities, just over $600. As you can see, basic food to gormet extravagence and everything in between. My advice: have at least one outstanding gormet dinner while you are here. You will remember it for a long time.

You are only as old as you feel. Every hotel has a lounge and most have dance clubs. Just look around (that%26#39;s half the fun).

Finally: Ask questions! Hotel staff talk to each other about what they did on the weekend. They hear tourists talking about what they have done. Being in contact with so many different people on a daily basis you get pretty good at reading them and finding the perfect place may be just a question away.

After you get here: you look around and ask questions + we answer questions and make suggestions = you have a great time.
