Driving from Las Vegas Nevada to Salt Lake City Utah

Hey guy! First of all, let me thank you in advance for helping me in here. I%26#39;m from Singapore, and this will be my 2nd time visiting the US. However, this will be my 1st time visiting the US during Winter.

I will be spending 17 days in the states (LA - Palm Springs - Arizona - Vegas - Salt Lake - Boise - Portland - Red Bluff - San Francisco) (Mainly a golfing holiday)

I will post respective questions regarding different states in the respective forums.

Over here, I%26#39;d like to gather some info for my drive from Las Vegas Nevada to Salt Lake City. Please try to bear with me as some of the questions I ask may seem stupid to you....but coming from Singapore where we have no winter %26amp; no snow.....:(

1) On google, it says the drive from Las Vegas to Salt Lake City is 6hrs. Is that accurate? What are the driving conditions like during Jan from Vegas to Salt Lake? Is it congested? Weather? Is it rainy? Will it be snowing?

2) I have some friends who told me that it will be snowing big time in Jan. Is that true? If so, will the roads be covered with snow hence causing some delay in my trip? Is it safe to drive? I have checked with Hertz and they said their cars are installed with All Weather Tires. What time does it get dark? Will it be more dangerous if we drive in the dark? (Difficult to see road conditions, blindspots etc...)

3) How much is the tax in Salt Lake City? This tax thingy was a major culture shock to me when I visited last year. I%26#39;d like to be more prepared this time so I can work out my budget.

We%26#39;re planning to stay at the Hampton Inn Salt Lake City Central...any comments?

Thanks so much for your precious time in helping me plan my trip easier. Appreciate it lots!

Just because its January doesnt mean it will be snowing. Does it snow in Jan? Yes. The drive will take about 5 1/2-6 hours give or take depending on weather and how many stops you make. Ive made that drive many times to go skiing, the weather could be heavy snow, rain or very sunny. Pay attention to the weather report before you leave, I-15 is a major highway, so the road crews do an excellent job of clearing the snow, unless its a major snow storm, you more than likely wont have any problems. I also would try and drive during the daylight for obvious reasons, its darker, and colder at night, wet roads can freeze, etc. I would try and rent a 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive if possible or even a front wheel drive.

Thanks.....I have read in some replied from my other posts that I need to get chains

Totally agree with GoodBeer. I%26#39;ve driven from Vegas to SLC many times, I usually take it easy %26amp; made it in about 7 hours with stops (about 400miles). I-15 is major highway, very seldom snow chains is required unless it is sudden storm that road crew cant clean up fast enough.

Sales tax in SLC is 4.65%, food tax is 3%. One of the cheaper States compared to Nevada.

Hampton Inn is a moderate priced business chain by the Hilton family, stayed at various locations multiple times, they are fine for the stay and downtown SL is where the headquarter of Mormon (LDS) located, plus they had the Olympics held in SLC few years back, you wont find too many rift-raft there, it is safe. It is a dry State, meaning very different than the boozy lifestyle you will see in Vegas.

And if you also like skiing (cant tell you much about golfing in winter in Utah), then you come to one of the many greatest snows on earth. Ranging from Snowbird, Alta etc 30 minutes from SLC to Sundance, Park City, Brian Head etc Dont miss it. Even for a novice like myself I took advantage of many of them when I lived there for many years.

Thanks!
